As formula 1 fans look towards the US GP last weekend, the music world and F1 world became one after a very awkward encounter occured with Martin Brundle and Megan Thee Stallion.
While some publications have dubbed it a “snub” from Megan Thee Stallion’s bodyguard, it was more of a cringe, after he asked the singer to “freestyle rap”.
Footage of the awkward encounter was broadcast on Sky Sports, as the rapper attended the US Grand Prix alongside boyfriend Pardison Fontain .
I’m actually tired of F1 fans man. Just a bunch of incels.
A black woman didn’t want to speak to the interviewer and you guys get bent out of shape. But if Kimi did that you would all be clapping. GTFO— TOMI (@TOMImusic) October 26, 2021
Martin Brundle attempted to gain an interview with the Houston hottie, for his pre-race grid walk segment, Brundle was seen approaching the star’s entourage, when Megan gave him a chance to speak he stupidly asked her to rap – lol?.
“Megan, Martin Brundle from British television, how are you? Megan Thee Stallion, you’re a freestyle rapper.”
“You’re a freestyle rapper, have you got any rap for us today on Formula One?” – CRIIIIINGE.
For many Hip-hop fans this moment was extra cringe, but for other aspiring Black broadcasters this was just a subtle reminder that the sport and everything in-between it still has a long way to go. The moment could have co been avoided if
A.) The presenter had been Black
and B.) well….if the presenter had been Black.
It was obvious that the sport was continously tried to move with the times and diminish the “white washed sport” rumours. We even had to endure the cringe attempt to move the sports with the “times” – let’s not mention last years “show of solidarity” with the BLM movement. It all just feels like a show off move with the sports and Martin Brundle’s attempt was rude, unprofessional and a sobering reminder that the sport still has a long was to go before it is inclusive to anyone other than its white viewers.
Lets not forget how entitled it is to approach someone and demand an interview..of which made absolutely no sense – at all.
It’s concerning how easy it is for white men to get away with harassing Black women, and the publications that have supported “icon” Martin. Her security were right in protecting her. I say, protect Black Women at all costs.
counterpoint:
The F1 grid immediately prior to the race has, by long tradition, been a place where journalists and TV crews roam and seek quick interviews with teams, drivers and celebrities.
By being a celebrity and walking around on the grid in the build-up, a person is pretty much fair game to be approached by tv crews.
Martin Brundle did nothing wrong by wanting to talk to her. Agree that asking her to rap was a dumb question though.
Megan responded fine, spoke to him. She did nothing wrong.
The only parties to the encounter who were at all out of order were her bodyguards, who were too agressive. They should not have laid hands on a broadcaster.
To ask a frestyle rapper to freestyle is not a dumb question, I’m pretty sure that harry mack who is a real freestyle rapper, not like this fake one. He would be all over it if he would have been asked. Also pretty sure Harry mack would show up without security guards tbh.
IT wasn’t a dumb question, if the presenter was black it would not have changed anything and stop trying to make this a race thing again. It’s fucking stupid. actually this is the dumbest thing i heard about this, to make it a race thing again. should we have also more diversity in NBA? that would equal to less black people in the NBA? of course not! in each sport it should be best of the best. stop the racism nonsense now.
It is a shame that this writer is trying to make it a racial thing.
To me, this just seems like cheap, clickbaity garbage journalism. If the writer wants to get the attention of people and the viewership, the writer in question shouldn’t cheapen their piece with such glaringly contentious writing, and rather invest time in putting together a thoughtful piece (regardless of what the writer’s opinion might be)
